The Japanese government and its related organizations have issued several plans to tackle with those issues. Therefore, we need to know the more details of oversea experiences to make a future plan to introduce the systems of prevention of medical accidents or/and compensation for them. Sweden is one of the countries that are conscious of installing such systems, especially patient compensation system for injury caused by medical activities. The Swedish system has been developed since 1972. The main characteristic of its original scheme was a kind of voluntary based self-insurance. However, this voluntary based self-insurance system changed to a compulsory based system since in 1997. The Swedish system of patient compensation in medical injury has a long history compared with other countries. However, it should be important to fully be notified that Sweden is a relatively small country in that its population and economic scale. Moreover, Sweden has developed the richest multi-tiered social security system among the European countries.
