In other words, one goal of this system is to provide services to help people returning home instead of staying at the hospital or in a facility. However, few studies explain in detail the medical and long-term care services provided by home care professionals and the care provided by family to patients requiring these types of care. Thus, there is a lack of documentation concerning the services that the community-based integrated should provide. This research clarify the medical needs of elderly requiring care at home by conducting, during one week, a self-reported time and motion study directly at home. The goal was to identify the nature and the variation of care provided by family and staff depending on the medical needs of elderly, to analyze the type of care per time frame, and to provide information to build a care delivery system that supports elderly requiring medical and long-term care at home 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Results show that care from long-term care services providers can only be found between 9 am and 4 pm and that medical procedures that frequently occur outside of this time frame have to be performed by family members. Thus, according to this empirical data, a back up system available 24 hours a day for medical procedures has to be implemented. Moreover, periodic visit services should be available 24 hours a day for management and treatment purposes.
